Biodegradable Film Labels · Eco-friendly

The only claim here that is about the end, not the beginning

The short answer: cellulose and PLA films are made from wood pulp and plant starch rather than oil, and they are the materials in this range designed to break down afterwards. Two conditions apply, and both matter: the adhesive has to be the biodegradable one, and « biodegradable » is not the same word as « home compostable ». From £207 per 100.

The condition everyone forgets

A compostable film with an ordinary glue is not a compostable label

A label is three layers: the face material, the adhesive and the ink. Change only the first and you have a compostable film stuck down with conventional acrylic — which is the single most common mistake in eco packaging, and the one an auditor finds first.

On this range a biodegradable permanent adhesive is available and it must be asked for explicitly, because it is a separate choice from the material. We put it on the proof so that what you ordered is written down.

The second condition is vocabulary. « Biodegradable » says a material breaks down; it says nothing about how long or under what conditions. « Home compostable » and « industrially compostable » are specific, certified claims. If you intend to print one of them, tell us before the order and we supply the certificate for that exact stock rather than guessing on your behalf.

Choosing within the family

Clear when the pack is the point, white when the label is

Clear cellulose

The product shows through and only the printed elements are opaque. Ideal on a compostable pouch of tea, coffee or dried fruit.

from £216 / 100

White cellulose

A white film that behaves like plastic and is made from wood pulp. The everyday choice when the label carries the design.

from £207 / 100

Biodegradable coated paper

For brands that want a paper look with a composition argument. Same price as the white film, and it prints like an ordinary coated stock.

from £207 / 100

A gloss lamination is available on the cellulose films — worth knowing that it is a conventional film, so it changes the composition of what you are claiming. Most producers who choose this family leave the label unprotected.

FAQ

Biodegradable films — what brands ask us

Is the adhesive biodegradable too?

Only if you ask for it. A biodegradable permanent adhesive is available on this range and it is a separate choice from the material — a compostable film with a conventional glue is not a compostable label, and that is the mistake we see most often.

Is biodegradable the same as compostable?

No. Biodegradable means a material breaks down; it says nothing about the time or the conditions. Home compostable and industrially compostable are precise, certified claims. If you intend to print one of them, tell us before ordering and we supply the certificate for that exact stock rather than paraphrasing it.

What is cellulose film made from?

Wood pulp, regenerated into a transparent or white film. It looks and behaves much like a thin plastic — which is the point: it replaces an oil-based film in a pack that has to break down.

Can I laminate it?

A gloss lamination is offered, but it is a conventional film. Adding it protects the print and changes the composition of the label you are describing to your customers. Most producers in this family leave the stock bare and design accordingly.

Are PLA films available printed?

PLA is stocked as blank rolls at £58 per 100 for producers printing in-house. For a printed run, the cellulose films are the practical answer — same argument, and a proper full-colour result.

The film, the glue and the claim have to agree.
