The short answer: a cable label is cut in two parts — a printed panel and a clear tail. Wrap it round the cable and the transparent part seals over the text, which is then protected by the label itself. Why not an ordinary label

A cable is the worst surface in the building

It is narrow, round, flexible and often dusty, and it gets pulled through ducts. A rectangular label wrapped round it has a leading edge that catches on everything, and printed text on the outside is rubbed away within a year of handling.

The wrap-around solves both: the clear tail covers the printed panel, so nothing catches and nothing rubs. It is the standard marker in network installations, control panels and anywhere a circuit has to be identifiable in five years without an inventory list.

Getting the die right

Three measurements decide the shape

The cable diameter

It sets the length of the clear tail: enough to go round at least once and overlap itself. Send the diameter and we size it.

What has to be readable

A port number needs little; a circuit reference with a date needs a panel two or three times larger. Design the panel around the longest text.

How it will be applied

By hand on an installed cable, or on the bench before pulling? A bench job tolerates a longer tail; an in-situ job needs a shape you can wrap with one hand.

Send the cable diameter and a sample of the text with your request — we draw the die and show it on the proof before anything is cut.

Cable markers — what installers ask us

How does a self-laminating label work?

The label has two zones: an opaque printed panel and a clear tail. You stick the panel to the cable and continue wrapping; the transparent tail passes over the printed area and seals it. The print ends up sandwiched between the film and itself — protected from abrasion, dust and handling.

What do you need from me to make the die?

The cable diameter and the text that has to fit. From those two we size the panel and the tail so the label wraps at least once and overlaps itself, and we show the shape on the proof before cutting.

One colour or full colour?

One colour at £181 per 100 covers almost every installation job — black on clear is the most legible. Full colour at £259 makes sense only for colour-coded systems where the colour carries information.

Can each label carry a different number?

Yes, and it is the usual case: port numbers, circuit references and barcodes printed label by label in the run, from 100. See numbered labels.

Will it survive in a duct or outdoors?

The polyester film and the self-lamination handle dust, friction and cleaning well. For long outdoor exposure or high temperature, tell us — a polyimide or a laminated industrial film may be the better specification.

Still readable when someone opens the panel in ten years.
