3M Property Marking Labels · Industrial & security

It cannot be moved to another laptop

The short answer: a 3M destructible polyurethane film. It is thin, conformable and deliberately brittle: lift a corner and it breaks into fragments that cannot be reassembled or reapplied. That is what separates property marking from a sticker with your name on it — and at €162 per 100 it is the cheapest real deterrent we sell.

Why destructible rather than VOID

Two different questions

A VOID film leaves a message on the object — the evidence stays where an inspector looks. A destructible film leaves nothing usable: it fragments, so the label cannot be transferred. For property marking, the second is what matters. Nobody needs proof that a laptop label was removed; what matters is that it cannot reappear on a different laptop.

It is also the more forgiving of the two on real surfaces. VOID polyester is stiff and works best on flat, smooth panels; this polyurethane is thin and conformable, so it follows a moulded plastic case, a textured housing or a screw head — exactly the shapes property labels end up on.

Worth knowing before you plan

This is the material where volume does not pay

On most labels the first hundred carries the die and the setup, and every additional hundred costs far less. Not here: the 3M film is the cost, so in 55 × 70 mm a run of 100 is €165 and a run of 3 000 is €1 115 — €1.65 a label against €0.37. The curve flattens early.

Two consequences. Ordering small is far less penalising than elsewhere, so there is no reason to over-buy. And above roughly 500 labels, a VOID polyester becomes cheaper per unit while doing a different job — worth comparing before committing to a large stock of seals.

FAQ

Property marking — what managers ask us

What happens exactly when someone tries to remove it?

The film tears into small fragments as soon as a corner lifts. There is no way to peel it in one piece, reassemble it or stick it to another item — which is the entire point of property marking.

Should I number the labels?

Yes, if the labels are meant to feed an inventory. A destructible label proves the material was not transferred; a serial number ties each item to a line in your register. Sequential numbers and barcodes are printed in the run from 100 — see numbered labels.

Does it work on textured plastic?

That is its advantage over VOID polyester. It is thin and conformable, so it follows a moulded case, a ribbed housing or a screw head — the surfaces property labels actually meet. VOID film is stiffer and prefers flat, smooth panels.

Can it be removed if we sell the equipment?

Not cleanly — it is designed not to be. Removing it means scraping fragments and adhesive. If assets change hands regularly and must look untouched, use a removable adhesive instead and accept that it offers no security.

Why does the price barely fall with quantity?

Because the 3M film itself is the main cost, not the die or the setup. From €165 at 100 labels to €1 115 at 3 000 in 55 × 70 mm, the per-label price only falls from €1.65 to €0.37. Buy what you need for the year rather than for five.
