The short answer: if the label touches the food itself, an ordinary food-grade adhesive is not enough — you need a certified material with a migration-tested adhesive and the declaration of compliance that an audit will ask for. That is this stock, at €261 per 100. If the label only touches the packaging, you do not need it.

Does the label actually touch the food?
It touches the food when it seals a paper-wrapped cheese, closes an unwrapped bakery item, or sits on the inner face of a lid. It does not touch the food when it is on the outside of a closed jar, a sealed tray or a film pack — and that covers the large majority of product labels.
The distinction matters because the certified stock costs €261 per 100 against €137 for a coated paper, and because a certification you do not need adds nothing to the pack. Every label we ship carries a food-grade adhesive as standard; this range is for the cases where that is not enough.

Direct contact — what producers ask us
When do I need a certified direct-contact label?
When the label touches the food itself rather than the outside of a sealed pack: a sticker closing a paper-wrapped cheese, a label on an unwrapped bakery item, a seal on the inner face of a lid. On a closed jar or a film pack, the food-grade adhesive every label already carries is sufficient.
What document do I get?
The manufacturer declaration of compliance for the material and its adhesive — the document a food safety audit asks for. Request it with your order and it travels with the delivery note; ask afterwards and we can still obtain it, but it takes longer than it should.
Why polyester rather than paper?
Because a certified direct-contact stock has to be tested as a whole — face material, adhesive and their behaviour against the food. The polyester in this range carries that testing; a certified coated paper also exists for cases where a paper look is required, and we spec it on request.
Is it also suitable for frozen products?
The material is, but the adhesive is the question: a freezer-grade adhesive is what bonds on a cold, damp surface. Tell us the temperature at the moment of labelling and we spec accordingly — see deep-freeze labels.
Can it carry a batch number?
Not printed in the run on this stock. Most producers print the date and the lot as they pack, on a separate thermal label — see direct thermal — and keep the certified label for the part that touches the food.
