Greaseproof Labels · Functional

The label that does not go transparent by Tuesday

The short answer: fat migrates through ordinary paper. On a cheese, a charcuterie or a buttery pastry, a standard label turns translucent and blotchy within a day on the shelf — the print still readable, the label visibly ruined. A greaseproof stock stops the migration and stays opaque for the whole shelf life. From €199 per 100.

A rare combination

Technical, and it still looks artisan

Most functional materials are films: they solve the problem and they look like packaging. This one does not — it is a Tintoretto, the same felt-marked textured paper used on prestige wine labels, in a greaseproof version. So a cheesemaker gets the barrier without giving up the craft look, which is the whole reason the stock exists.

It is a paper, so the usual paper limits apply: it stops fat, not water. On a product that is both greasy and wet — a brined cheese, a marinade — the honest answer is a synthetic film with a food-grade adhesive, and the acceptance that it will look like a film.

FAQ

Greaseproof — what producers ask us

What actually happens to an ordinary label on cheese?

Fat migrates into the paper fibres and fills the microscopic air gaps that make paper opaque. The label turns translucent and blotchy — usually within a day at a counter — and the pack looks old before the product is anywhere near its date.

Is it certified for direct food contact?

It carries a food-grade adhesive, which covers a label applied to the wrapping. If the label touches the food itself, you need the certified direct-contact stock and its declaration of compliance — a different material at €261 per 100.

Does it also resist moisture?

No. It stops fat, not water: it is a paper. For a wet product — brine, marinade, a chilled display with condensation — use a synthetic film with a food-grade adhesive and accept the change of look.

Can I have it varnished?

It is supplied unprotected, which keeps the felt texture. A varnish would flatten exactly what makes this stock look artisan, and it adds nothing to the grease barrier, which is in the paper itself.

Is the greaseproof version more expensive than plain Tintoretto?

No: €199 per 100 against €205 for the standard textured papers — it is in fact marginally cheaper. The barrier costs nothing extra, so on any greasy product there is no reason to take the ordinary stock.

Cheese wins against paper. Not against this one.
