Brown paper says more than a brown background

The short answer: unbleached kraft with visible fibres, warm brown right through the sheet. It takes black, dark colours and hot foil beautifully, and photographs badly — which is exactly why it suits producers whose product is the argument. From €205 per 100, and it must stay dry.

Designing on kraft

Everything you print gets browner

Kraft is not white paper with a brown ink under it: the sheet itself is coloured, so every transparent printing ink sits on top of that brown. Pale tints disappear, blues turn muddy, and a photograph loses most of its contrast. White text does not exist at all unless we print an opaque white layer underneath it first.

What works is what the material was made for:

  • black, deep greens and reds — single flat colours;
  • line drawings and typography;
  • gold or silver hot foil — opaque metal, it reads perfectly against the fibre.

Design for two colours and kraft flatters you; design for four and it fights you.

The honest limit

Kraft and moisture do not get along

It is an uncoated paper. A wet thumb marks it, a fridge shelf softens it, and a bottle in an ice bucket destroys it in under an hour. That is not a defect — it is what gives the surface its feel. Three ways round it, in increasing order of compromise:

FAQ

Kraft — what producers ask us

Is kraft paper waterproof?

No. It is uncoated paper, so it marks with a wet thumb and wrinkles in condensation. For a chilled bottle or a damp cellar, use the wet-strength aquaproof paper at €184 per 100, or a synthetic film at €173.

Can I print white text on kraft?

Only with an opaque white layer printed underneath. Four-colour inks are transparent, so white simply does not appear on a brown sheet. We add the white backing where your design needs it and show it on the proof — it is a normal part of the job, not an extra.

Does kraft take gold foil?

Extremely well, and it is the pairing most customers come for. Foil is pressed metal rather than ink, so it stays perfectly bright against the fibre. Hot foil starts at 100 labels; the deep black stock in the same range is the other classic foil partner.

Is your kraft recycled?

It is unbleached virgin fibre, which is what gives it the colour and the strength. If the recycled content is the point of your packaging, look at the eco range — recycled white, sugarcane and grass paper each carry a claim you can actually make.

Can I have batch numbers on kraft labels?

Not printed in the run: variable data is not available on creative papers. Either overprint the batch yourself on a separate small label, or move the design to a coated stock. Tell us the constraint in a custom request and we look at both.
