Tintoretto Labels · Creative papers

The label people touch before they read

The short answer: Tintoretto is a felt-marked paper — an irregular, slightly mottled relief pressed into a heavy sheet. It is the most tactile stock in the range, it holds ink and foil superbly, and it is the one buyers describe as « expensive » without knowing why. White or ivory, from £175 per 100.

Why it feels different

Relief you can read with a thumb

Most « textured » papers are embossed after the fact with a regular pattern that repeats every few millimetres. Tintoretto is felt-marked during manufacture, so the relief is irregular and never repeats — the eye reads it as material rather than as decoration, which is the whole difference between a label that looks textured and one that feels made.

Practical consequences: leave it unvarnished, always, or you pay for a texture and then flatten it. Set type a size larger than you would on coated paper, because the surface eats fine detail. And keep the design quiet — on this stock, empty space is the argument.

FAQ

Tintoretto — what customers ask us

What does felt-marked mean?

The texture is pressed into the sheet by a felt roller while the paper is still wet, so it is part of the material rather than a pattern stamped on afterwards. It is irregular and never repeats, which is why it reads as a real surface rather than as an effect.

White or ivory?

Ivory warms up a design and suits food, oil and traditional wines; white keeps it contemporary and lets a strong colour sing. Both cost the same, and the tint does more for the label than an additional printed colour usually would.

Should I varnish it?

No, in almost every case. A varnish protects the ink but smooths the relief, which is the reason you chose the paper. If the label will be handled hard, the honest answer is a different material rather than a coated Tintoretto — see protection options.

How small can the text be?

Set it one size larger than you would on coated paper, and avoid hairlines under about 0.3 mm — the relief breaks up very fine detail. Mandatory legal text stays perfectly legible at normal sizes; it is decorative fine print that suffers.

Is it available for a bottle that goes in a fridge?

Not usefully. It is an uncoated paper and condensation marks it within the hour. For chilled bottles use the wet-strength aquaproof at £157 per 100, which keeps a paper feel, or a synthetic film if appearance matters less than survival.
