Coated paper — what customers ask us
What is a coated paper label?
A paper whose surface has been coated so that ink sits on top of it instead of soaking in. That is what makes colours look bright and photographs look sharp, and it is why coated paper is the default label stock for most products sold indoors — jars, boxes, bottles that do not get wet, cosmetics cartons, dispatch and information labels.
Do I need lamination on a paper label?
Not always. A gloss varnish is enough for a label that lives on a shelf. Lamination — gloss or matt — is worth it when the product is handled a lot, wiped, or exposed to a little moisture: it protects the ink and stops the paper marking. It is not waterproofing, though. If the label will actually get wet, you want a synthetic film, not a laminated paper.
Can coated paper labels be printed in one colour only?
Yes, and it is markedly cheaper: one or two colours on coated satin starts at £117 per 100 against £146 in full colour. For batch labels, information labels and anything typographic, one colour is often the better-looking option as well as the cheaper one.
Can I print batch numbers or barcodes on coated paper?
Yes. Coated papers are part of the variable-data range: sequential numbering, EAN and Code 128 barcodes and unique QR codes are printed label by label inside the same run, from 100 labels.
How long do coated paper labels last?
Years indoors, out of direct sunlight — which covers most products. Outdoors, or anywhere with water, condensation or repeated cleaning, paper is the wrong choice and a synthetic film is the right one. That single question, wet or dry, decides the material more than any other.
